One of the most defining moments of 2024 was the decision of The Gambia’s National Assembly to uphold the 2015 ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a victory that reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting the rights of women and girls. This outcome was not achieved without resistance; there were attempts by some policymakers and interest groups to repeal the law, citing cultural and religious justifications. However, through strategic advocacy and grassroots mobilization, GAMCOTRAP played a leading role in ensuring that the ban remained in place.
