Upholds The Band On FGM

SIGNIFICANT LAMDMARK NATIONAL ASSEMBLY UPHOLDS THE BAND ON FGM

One of the most defining moments of 2024 was the decision of The Gambia’s National Assembly to uphold the 2015 ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a victory that reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting the rights of women and girls. This outcome was not achieved without resistance; there were attempts by some policymakers and interest groups to repeal the law, citing cultural and religious justifications. However, through strategic advocacy and grassroots mobilization, GAMCOTRAP played a leading role in ensuring that the ban remained in place.

In the face of this challenge, GAMCOTRAP engaged key stakeholders, including policymakers, community leaders, civil society organizations, and international human rights groups. We organized high-level dialogues, public sensitization campaigns, and media engagements to raise awareness about the dangers of FGM and the importance of maintaining the legal framework that prohibits it. Testimonies from survivors, health professionals, and religious leaders who opposed the practice further strengthened the movement.

The National Assembly’s decision to reject the repeal was a watershed moment in The Gambia’s human rights landscape. It not only protected millions of girls from a harmful and life-threatening practice but also sent a strong message that the country remains committed to gender equality and the rights of children. While this was a landmark victory, we recognize that enforcement remains a challenge. Moving forward, GAMCOTRAP will continue working to ensure that the ban is effectively implemented, that survivors receive the support they need, and that communities remain educated on the dangers of FGM.

This milestone is a testament to the power of advocacy, collective action, and resilience. It serves as an inspiration for our continued work and a reminder that meaningful change is possible when communities, organizations, and policymakers work together to uphold fundamental human rights.
